Post Graduate Fellowship Program in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery

Obesity and metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia pose significant global health challenges that affect quality of life.

Bariatric and metabolic surgery has emerged as one of the most effective long-term treatment options for these conditions. Our postgraduate fellowship program in bariatric and metabolic surgery is designed to provide surgeons with specialised training in the field, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to lead in both clinical and academic settings.

Program overview

The fellowship is a 1-year program tailored to experienced general surgeons who seek to specialise in bariatric and metabolic surgery. The program integrates advanced clinical training, research, and comprehensive care approaches to treating obesity and its related comorbidities.

This program aims to enhance the delivery of metabolic surgery through well-maintained standards based on an international bariatric training program recommendation required by a fellow to become an expert in bariatric surgery and advanced laparoscopic surgery.

  • Gain expertise in managing obesity by learning the appropriate surgical treatment options, understanding preoperative care, and effectively addressing potential early and late complications.
  • To gain experience with different bariatric surgical procedures and receive mentorship through the learning curve.
  • Participate in scientific activity by producing at least one publication in the field of bariatric and metabolic surgery.
  • Participate in teaching sessions of junior colleagues and allied health care professionals.

Advanced clinical training: The core of the fellowship focuses on providing hands-on experience in primary and revisional bariatric surgeries. Fellows will participate in a wide range of procedures, including:

  • Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG)
  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB)
  • Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB)
  • Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS)
  • Revisional surgeries (to correct or enhance previous bariatric surgeries)
  • Endoscopic procedures including intragastric balloon placements and endoluminal procedures for metabolic surgery.

Training in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted techniques will be emphasised, ensuring fellows gain expertise in the latest surgical innovations.

  • Multidisciplinary care approach
  • Bariatric surgery is more than a surgical solution; it requires a comprehensive care approach. Fellows will engage in multidisciplinary team meetings, collaborating with:
    • Endocrinologists
    • Nutritionists
    • Psychologists
    • Gastroenterologists
    • Anesthesiologists
  • These interactions will provide a holistic understanding of preoperative evaluation, postoperative care, and long-term patient management.
  • Metabolic and comorbidity management
  • Fellows will gain in-depth knowledge of the **metabolic impacts** of bariatric surgery, including its role in the remission of conditions such as:
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • Hypertension
    • Hyperlipidemia
    • Sleep apnea
  • Training will also focus on metabolic syndrome management through a surgical and medical approach, understanding how bariatric surgery alters metabolic pathways to improve patient outcomes.
  • Research and academic development
  • The fellowship encourages active participation in clinical and translational research. Fellows will have access to a dedicated research team and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. Key research opportunities include:
    • Participation in ongoing clinical trials
    • Contribution to scientific publications in renowned bariatric and metabolic surgery journals.
    • Presentation opportunities at national and international conferences, enhancing academic profiles
  • Fellows are expected to develop and complete a research project during the program, which will form the basis for future publications and presentations.
  • Patient care and long-term follow-up
  • Understanding the long-term management of bariatric patients is crucial. The fellowship program emphasizes postoperative care, focusing on:
    • Nutritional support: Monitoring and managing the patient's dietary needs post-surgery, addressing deficiencies, and guiding patients on their new nutritional journey.
    • Complication management: Early identification and treatment of potential complications such as leaks, strictures, and malabsorption syndromes.
    • Psychological support: Recognizing the psychological challenges patients may face post-surgery, including body image issues, eating disorders, and depression.
  • Fellows will also learn how to design and implement long-term follow-up programs to ensure sustained weight loss and metabolic improvements.
  • Advanced minimally invasive bariatric surgical techniques.
  • Develop expertise in the multidisciplinary management of obese patients, addressing nutritional, metabolic, and psychological aspects.
  • Understand the role of bariatric surgery in metabolic disease remission, particularly type 2 diabetes and related comorbidities.
  • Gain proficiency in managing postoperative complications and the long-term care of bariatric patients.
  • Contribute to cutting-edge research in bariatric and metabolic surgery, with opportunities for national and international publication and presentations.

Our fellowship is led by an experienced faculty of world-renowned bariatric surgeons who are actively involved in both clinical practice and research. Fellows will receive personalized mentorship, participating in one-on-one surgical training and academic development sessions.
